Il libro si presenta come un trattato economico classico, dove le questioni tradizionali (consumo, produzione, distribuzione del reddito) sono subordinate al tema della crescita industriale della nazione: via via che l'industria si specializza e aumenta la ricchezza complessiva, aumentano coloro che possono vivere senza lavorare.
