A cent'anni dalla sua uscita, La teoria della classe agiata di Veblen conserva una notevole importanza. Il libro si presenta come un trattato economico classico, dove le questioni tradizionali (consumo, produzione, distribuzione del reddito) sono subordinate al tema della crescita industriale della nazione: via via che l'industria si specializza e aumenta la ricchezza complessiva, aumentano coloro che possono vivere senza lavorare. E costoro, mantenendo gente che a sua volta non lavora, immobilizzano risorse che potrebbero essere impiegate nel processo industriale. Applicando un modello di ricostruzione storica «a ritroso», l'autore mette in luce il carattere retrogrado delle società moderne, indicando diversi esempi di sopravvivenza barbarica presenti nella grande aristocrazia americana.
