About This Book

This book is the first and for the time being only comprehensive theoretical and practical work on the Indian tradition of the Brazilian Catimbó. On almost 600 pages, the concepts, the organization, the mythology, the rituals, the terms of this centuries-old Indian shamanic tradition are discussed. A book for anyone interested in shamanic traditions. The book is also aimed at those who deal with these traditions in practice and are looking for concrete tips for the traditional ritual implementation. The tradition of Catimbó, which is native to northeastern Brazil, is an enrichment especially for those who are already familiar with the Amazonian traditions of Ayahuasca and Kambô.

MESTRES, MESTRAS AND OTHER REPRESENTATIVES OF CATIMBÓ
Call of Mestres, Mestras, Caboclos, Caboclas, Boiadeiros, Boiadeiras
Following are some generic songs for invoking the Masters. This is followed in the rituals by dozens of specific songs invoking particular Masters and Indians. These are reproduced as part of the presentation of individual archetypes. As far as possible, songs are reproduced whose sheet music can still be found. Occasionally also songs whose notes are not known to the author, but which characterize the archetypes well.

V
Galo preto romanisco
Que cantou no meu Terreiro
Cantou no pé da Jurema meu Jesus
Lá no pé do seu cruzeiro
Quando eu baixo numa mesa
Eu baixo pra trabalhar
Venho dominar a mesa meus irmãos
Pra ninguém não dominar
Romanesque Black Rooster
Who sang in my Terreiro
He sang at the foot of the Jurema my Jesus
There at the foot of your cruise
When I get down on a table
I go down to work
I come to dominate the table my brothers
For no one not to dominate
VI
Eu venho de cidade em cidade,
Ouvindo a campa bater,
Com o poder do pai eterno
Meus trabalhos eu vou vencer
Auê, auê, ele é o Mestre melhor do mundo,
Que vem da vila cabo é o primeiro sem segundo,
Olha o sol clareou, o sol clareou
O sol clareou na cidade da Jurema.
ô se balança o galho da Jurema ô se balança galho por galho
Tome cuidado com a semente da Jurema, ô meu Mestre
ela é seca, se balança mais não cai.
I come from town to town,
Hearing the bell rumbling,
With the power of the eternal father
My works I will win
Auê, auê, he is the best Master in the world,
Who comes from the cabo village is the first without a second,
Look at the sun brightened, the sun brightened
The sun brightened in the city of Jurema.
oh, Jurema's branch is swinging, oh, branch by branch is swinging
Beware of the Jurema seed, oh my Master
it is dry, it shakes but does not fall.
VII
Eu só vim aqui
Porque fui chamado
Meu capote de veludo
Com chapéu dourado
Eu também tenho cavalo
Para andar montado
I just came here
Because i was called
My velvet cloak
With golden hat
I also have a horse
To ride mounted
VIII
A sala tá cheia minha gente
Como é que eu entro agora
Eu entro minha gente, eu entro
Com Deus e Nossa Senhora
The room is full my people
How do I get in now
I enter my people, I enter
With God and Our Lady
Malunguinho
I

Malunguinho é Reis de pomar
Abre portas e janelas
Pra Malunguinho passar
Em cima daquela serra
Tem um Cruzeiro assentado
É do Reis Sebastião
Que é dono deste reinado
Repete refrão
Em cima daquela serra
Tem um cruzeiro de ouro
É do Teis Sebastião
Que é dono deste tesouro
Em cima daquela serra
Tem dois ‘Caboco’ tomando água no coité
Olha o som do gaito
Mestre do reis dos Canindé
Abre, abre, Malunguinho,
Vem abrir nossos caminhos
Abre, abre Malunguinho
Que estão cheios...
