Innovador y polémico, la obra de Richard Serra (1939) se basa en el uso de formas geométricas abstractas y se encuadra en el genérico posminimalismo desarrollado desde fines de los años sesenta. Básicamente escultor, su extensa producción abarca diversos géneros: escultura, obra gráfica y fílmica… En sus piezas escultóricas destaca el interés por los materiales y procesos industriales, explotando las posibilidades tectónicas del acero para construir piezas "sin pedestal" que se acercan a la arquitectura en términos de escala y tamaño. Piezas, muchas veces concebidas específicamente para lugares concretos, que aspiran con su presencia a la redefinición física y perceptiva del emplazamiento, sea arquitectónico, urbano o paisaje natural. Serra desarrolla a lo largo de su trayectoria un interés progresivo por los procesos de recepción del espectador. Su obra se basa en unos principios constructivos muy simples que entrañan una gran complejidad perceptiva estimulando la dialéctica entre el sujeto, el objeto y el contexto espacial, creando una concepción espacio-temporal de la percepción que sitúa en el espectador el centro de sus investigaciones y que será llevada a sus extremos en obras en el paisaje urbano y natural. Así, las piezas de Serra proyectan espacios de comportamiento que envuelven al espectador en una vorágine sensorial y psicológica no exenta de evocaciones ilusionistas y metafóricas en algunas de sus últimas obras.
