Artista polifacético -grafista, diseñador, pintor, cineasta, fotógrafo, promotor de grupos musicales y escritor-, se instaló en Nueva York a principios de los años cincuenta y, tras un período en el que su tarea estuvo relacionada con el diseño, empezó a pintar. Pronto se hizo muy famoso y su obra ha llegado a influir de manera decisiva en los artistas de generaciones posteriores.
