L'immagine di Mazzarino (1602-1661) come abile manovratore e dominus assoluto della politica europea, pur avendo indubbi elementi di verità, è parziale e probabilmente derivante dalla sua vita avventurosa. In questa biografia l'autore indaga sul suo vero ruolo in quella particolare fase della storia francese ed europea rappresentata dalla transizione verso l'assolutismo monarchico. Lungi dall'essere una sorta di debole controfigura del suo predecessore Richelieu, il cardinale era dotato di una spiccata individualità. Il suo modello politico era più "romano" che "francese", appreso negli anni della giovinezza al servizio della Santa Sede. Un modello assolutista, poco capace di comprendere realtà che a Roma non esistevano, portato a valorizzare la mediazione diplomatica e l'esercizio del clientelismo, del tutto alieno da una progettualità di riforma. Ne emerge la figura di un politico che intese la sua azione come un'arte, una pratica molto raffinata, nel fedele servizio a un sovrano. Non un politico machiavellico, dunque, ma neanche un teorico, come per molti versi era stato Richelieu, Mazzarino aveva però la straordinaria capacità di interpretare un'epoca ricca di contrasti.
