Alimentato da una rete di rimandi letterari che comprende la vita di Dante e la tragedia di Romeo e Giulietta, il riferimento dovrebbe essere alle parti che a cominciare dal XIII secolo divisero l'Italia comunale tra fautori della Chiesa e sostenitori dell'Impero e si batterono per la supremazia sulla penisola. Era davvero cosí? I termini "guelfi" e "ghibellini" rimandavano a due fazioni coerenti, ideologicamente connotate e contrapposte o erano piuttosto casacche da indossare e togliere a seconda delle convenienze del momento?
