Diffamate per la loro vanità o per la dubbia moralità delle loro vite private, restarono legate a doppio filo l'una all'altra, prima che il flagello della Rivoluzione recidesse l'ordito dei loro destini, allorquando, in uno dei momenti fatali della storia universale, le giovani arciduchesse austriache divennero «l'una vittima del parossismo sanguinario della rivoluzione francese, l'altra carnefice dei primi campioni del liberalismo italiano».
