Templari e francescani nacquero dal tentativo di fornire un orizzonte nuovo alla religiositĂ  laicale. Entrambi, benchĂ© in tempi diversi, mantennero uno stretto legame con la Terrasanta, custodendone i luoghi in favore dei pellegrini, armati e non. Dal loro confronto emergono notevoli somiglianze ma anche differenze sostanziali, pur nella continuitĂ  e nella tensione tra crociata e missione, che entrambi incarnavano. L'ideale "passaggio di testimone" dall'uno all'altro ordine avrebbe portato, nei primi decenni del Trecento, alla fondazione della "Custodia Terrae Sanctae" – ancora oggi attiva –, istituzione che avrebbe raccolto il legame profondo instaurato coi Luoghi Santi dal Tempio sino alla sua soppressione, nel 1312. Per entrambi gli ordini, la Terrasanta rivestiva un ruolo particolare; un ruolo troppo spesso banalizzato nel tradizionale accostamento degli uni alla guerra e alla difesa del territorio, degli altri alla pace (se non a un anacronistico "pacifismo"). Questo libro mostra come la realtĂ  fosse piĂș complessa raccontando la storia del rapporto fra templari e minori, tra laicato cristiano, crociata e Terrasanta.
