Tra i massimi poeti del Quattrocento, di certo il piú amabile e godibile, Matteo Maria Boiardo (1441-1494) torna a essere al centro di una monografia, dopo quasi novant'anni dall'ultima pubblicata (opera di Giulio Reichenbach, nel 1929).Il volume di Tiziano Zanato recupera in toto la figura del conte di Scandiano, indagando l'intero arco della sua produzione, a cominciare da quella del giovane poeta latino dei Pastoralia (10 egloghe di 100 versi ciascuna), dei Carmina in Herculem, con le loro preziosità metriche, e dei piú tardi Epigrammata. Segue l'impegnativo e discusso lavoro di volgarizzamento di testi greci (attraverso versioni latine) o latini, sia di carattere storico (Cornelio Nepote, Senofonte, Erodoto, fino al medievale Riccobaldo da Ferrara), sia letterario (Apuleio e Plauto). Spazio adeguato riceve la produzione bucolica in volgare di 10 Pastorale, tramite le quali Matteo Maria tornava, venti anni dopo, alle egloghe, né manca un'approfondita analisi del canzoniere Amorum libri tres scritto per Antonia Caprara. Fino all'Inamoramento de Orlando (secondo il titolo ritenuto originale, contro quello tradizionale di Orlando innamorato), il capolavoro che impegnò Boiardo per l'intera sua vita e al quale è dedicato un corposo capitolo.Alla fine emerge da queste pagine un profilo del poeta molto piú complesso e sfaccettato, interessante e vivace, di quello, in buona parte sbiadito, che lo "legge" solo quale autore dell'Orlando innamorato, tutt'al piú ricordato per qualche episodio del poema e, immancabilmente, per aver offerto l'occasione a Ludovico Ariosto di scrivere il Furioso.
