Yamaga Sok? (1622–85) ist seit jeher eine prominente Rolle in der politischen Ideengeschichte Japans zugeschrieben worden. Manche sehen in ihm den Begründer eines frühneuzeitlichen Kriegerethos; für andere ist er der Vordenker einer konfuzianischen Neoklassik, die im 18. Jahrhundert großen Einfluss gewann. Trotz dieser Wertschätzungen fehlt bislang eine Auseinandersetzung mit den zentralen Begriffen seiner Lehre. Diese Studie rekonstruiert Sok?s Begriffsbildung und zeichnet seinen Rationalitätsentwurf für ein praktisches Wissen und Handeln der zeitgenössischen Obrigkeit nach. Durch ihre quellennahe Analyse werden Anknüpfungspunkte für eine neue Kontextualisierung des Werkes jenseits bisheriger Kategorisierungen erkennbar.
