…Il salotto di Clara Maffei, nata contessa Carrara-Spinelli, durò mezzo secolo a Milano, e fu per questo tempo il salotto più celebre di tutta Italia. Per cinquantadue anni, fu il centro di riunione di patrioti, letterati e artisti italiani, e degli stranieri illustri che, visitando la nostra Penisola, passavano per Milano. L'influenza, esercitata dal salotto Maffei nel decennio dal 1849 al 1859 nei destini di Lombardia e possiamo dire senza esagerazione d'Italia, non va trascurata. La sua patriottica irradiazione si diffuse oltre i limiti di Milano e della Lombardia: si diffuse in altre regioni italiane; e vi portò la parola d'ordine, la parola che ben presto divenne fatto. Anche fuori d'Italia, specialmente a Parigi, che pur vanta nella sua storia politica, letteraria e galante, salotti famosissimi, il nome di Clara Maffei era conosciuto e ripetuto con reverente simpatia…
