Georges Eugène Sorel (Cherbourg, 2 novembre 1847 – Boulogne-sur-Seine, 29 agosto 1922) è stato un filosofo, sociologo, ingegnere e pensatore francese, teorico del sindacalismo rivoluzionario. Nel 1908 pubblicò il suo libro più famoso, Considerazioni sulla violenza ( Réflexions sur la violence ). La prima traduzione italiana dell'opera fu realizzata da Antonio Sarno.
Sorel considerava la violenza necessaria nella lotta contro il capitalismo e rimproverava al marxismo il suo carattere utopistico e dogmatico. Le lotte sociali dei lavoratori e in particolare lo sciopero generale proletario (per differenziarlo invece dallo sciopero generale politico ), erano, nel suo pensiero, la rappresentazione del mito sociale garante delle trasformazioni.
