Aram Mattioli racconta in modo vivido il lungo e violento processo di colonizzazione messo in atto dai coloni bianchi contro i nativi indiani, interpretando gli eventi globali sullo sfondo dei fenomeni centrali, dal Settecento alla prima decade del Novecento. Allo stesso tempo, prende in considerazione il punto di vista dei «vinti» su un piano di parità e mostra come i popoli indigeni reagirono in vari modi all'accaparramento delle terre. Gli indiani subirono un vero e proprio attacco etnocida, che comportò la perdita di gran parte dei territori ancestrali, delle risorse naturali, delle basi di sussistenza, e del diritto ad autodeterminarsi. Dei numerosi «primi popoli» l'autore evidenzia strutture sociali, caratteri culturali e modi di vivere. In scene ricche di pathos, Mattioli descrive le battaglie decisive e ritrae con efficacia sia le persone comuni sia gli importanti protagonisti della politica, mantenendosi sempre in perfetto equilibrio tra la comprensione empatica e la sobria analisi scientifica, decostruendo le leggende del mondo occidentale per affinare la comprensione degli eventi reali. Un libro affascinante e innovativo sulla trasformazione del mondo americano, che getta nuova luce non solo sul passato ma anche sul presente degli Stati Uniti.
