Giuda si pentì, restituì i denari ai sacerdoti e si impiccò. Ormai sporche di sangue innocente, le monete non potevano essere depositate nel tesoro del Tempio e i sacerdoti le spesero per comprare un terreno.La storia dei trenta denari dovrebbe chiudersi con quella compravendita immobiliare, ma, imprevedibilmente, molti (presunti) esemplari furono venerati tra gli strumenti della Passione in chiese e monasteri di tutta Europa nel tardo medioevo e nell'età moderna. Erano parte del "corredo" di reliquie che permetteva di ricreare la Terrasanta in Occidente, e in gran parte furono dispersi quando se ne riconobbe la falsità.Pellegrini e leggende agiografiche, reliquie vere e false, immagini della Passione e indulgenze, antigiudaismo e devozione, ricerca antiquaria e pensiero economico: molti temi sono qui uniti dal filo d'argento della riflessione sulla moneta come misura in tutte le società.
