Remember
that
the
chronological
order
of
scenes
does
not
automatically
signal
a
causal/linear
plot;
look
to
the
connective
tissue
between
scenes.
Does
one
scene
literally
trigger
the
next,
in
a
causal
relationship?
For
example
in
Machinal,
each
scene
depicts
a
young
woman’s
journey
through
life,
examining
crit-
ical
crossroads:
her
career,
her
life
at
home,
her
marriage,
her
motherhood,
her
affair,
her
trial,
and
her
execution.
The
progres-
sion
of
scenes
is
chronological,
but
time
is
ill-defined,
seemingly
spanning
several
years.
One
scene
does
not
necessarily
trigger
the
next
in
a
tight
cause-to-effect
link,
rather
the
connective
tissue
that
holds
the
plot
together
is
the
theme
or
idea:
despair,
