GEOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY AND INDEX
The purpose of the Geographical Dictionary is to assist the reader of the Bible in locating places both in this atlas and on modern maps. The Geographical Dictionary lists all places found in the text and on the maps; page numbers in regular type refer to the text, those in bold type to the pages on which specific maps can be found.
Additional information is provided for biblical place names. First, a short description of the significance of a place is given, complete with biblical references. Note that not every reference is given for places mentioned numerous times in the Bible (e.g., Jerusalem, Babylon, Bethel); a concordance such as the NIV Complete Concordance or The Strongest NIV Exhaustive Concordance lists all occurrences of place names. In addition, many places are treated in more detail in the text (e.g., Jerusalem, which is discussed in a separate chapter, and the regions of the country such as the Bashan, Shephelah, Sea of Galilee, Edom, Moab have special subsections devoted to them), and the reader should consult the appropriate portions of the text.
This description is followed, wherever possible, by an identification of the ancient site with a “modern” place; this material is in italic type. I have attempted to use the most up-to-date site identifications. Some identifications are disputed; in those cases I have cited the identification I think to be the most probable one. (For the process of site identification, see the chapter on “The Disciplines of Historical Geography.”)
The modern designation of each site is given in English characters. A simplified system of transliteration from Arabic, Hebrew, Turkish, Greek, etc., into English has been used and is intended to be helpful to the general reader. In the case of sites located in Israel, the Arabic name is usually given first, followed by the Hebrew name. For places in the southern Levant (Israel, Jordan, and sometimes Lebanon and Syria), a six-digit grid reference is provided in parentheses to assist in precisely locating the place on the standard 1:250,000, 1:100,000, and 1:50,000 maps available for those countries (the first three digits serve to locate the site on a...
